Week 1!

Behavior and Compensation

One personal incident that I can recall where someone I knew engaged in behaviors that were directly correlated to compensation, was when one of my parents decided to stay at their place of work, despite feeling defeated. A few years ago my mom felt like her job was getting overwhelming and that she was not very well-liked by some of the people that she had to work with and it was making work less enjoyable. She sometimes felt defeated, and although she never seriously considered leaving her job, something that made her hardships feel like they were balanced was the compensation she received at the job. As one of the lectures talked about this week how long someone has been at a job is something that can legally allow for different compensation than those who may perform a similar job. My mom had been at her job for nearly 15 years at this point, and the money that she was making doing her job was fairly substantial, this is what made her push through the harder times she was feeling mentally and emotionally. Due to the fact that she was being compensated in a way that she found to be worth the struggles, she continued to work diligently and now finds herself in the same job position, but likes it even more and is glad she stuck with it. I think that she knew that she would not be on a higher pay if she did go somewhere else and that the work she was doing for the pay she was getting was a motivating factor to stay with her job.
