I’ve heard, as I’m sure many have, that money talks. While it does do this, better compensation can bring on even more benefits that are dependent on the type of job you have chosen. This happened to me when I took a job years back, that helped elevate my level of living. Before I had taken this job offer, I was working three jobs that were able to help me stay above water, but nothing that put me in a decent position. Upon taking this position, it changed how I looked at my current jobs and how I went into this one.
Compensation motivated me on the extrinsic side more than it did intrinsically. While I wanted to feel good internally and feel valued as an employee, at the time it mattered more monetary. This new job gave me insurance, PTO, and financial incentives that I hadn’t received in my job’s prior. I knew I was going to be able to worry less and focus on different priorities.
Even before I officially started my new job, I was acting differently at my places of work. The new form of compensation in the many different ways given, had let me relax at my former jobs and start planning for the future. I believe that this type of compensation can motivate many people when it brings more benefits with it. When going through orientation, it turned out that most of the people working with me had done the same factorization when taking this job as well. A lot of us didn’t feel the need to worry about it, however after years with this company we felt a commitment to it and like our jobs had value to them. Even though we hadn’t thought about the benefits to ourselves other than physically, it changed our behavior and how we looked at our own lives.
