The month of April is Centro Cultural César Chávez’s Tribute Month. This year’s theme for Tribute Month is #EstamosUnidosOSU. We chose this title because we wanted to represent unity across campus, our communities, and ultimately the world. We also thought that using the hashtag would be appropriate since in today’s age most people are tech savvy. This was also a way to collect and gather media from the month’s events. We intend to show the collection of media at the Tribute Month Dinner on Thursday, April 23rd which will be held in the MU Ballroom from 5:00 to 7:00pm. This is an open and free event that we encourage all community members to attend and participate in.
Tribute month kicked off with a Candlelight Vigil that was followed by an Open Mic Night. During this event we held a moment of silence for injustices that have occurred in our communities. After the vigil, the open mic followed where individuals were able to freely and safely share and express any work they had. Even the Centro’s assistant director, Melisa Lopez joined in on the festivities by leading a Happy Birthday song for César Chávez.
Mi Orgullo Hispano: Pride In Being Latin@ was an interactive event in which attendees helped make center pieces that will be later showcased at our Tribute Month Dinner. Lideres Latin@s del Siglo XXI was hosted at the Casa Latinos Unidos in Corvallis. In this event Kayla Garcia shared stories from her book that was focused around Latino Leaders. Profits made that night were directly contributed to Casa Latinos Unidos. Exploring the United Farm Workers Movement: Part 1 was a collaboration with the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center (APCC). It explored the contributions of the Filipinos and the Mexicans in the farm workers movement. We also got to enjoy a play production, Searching for Aztlán that was put on by Teatro Milagro. Our most recent event happened this last Thursday and it was titled Joteria. It explored the intersecting identities between identifying as LGBTQ and Latinx. We greatly appreciate everyone’s support and hope that it continues as we wrap up our Tribute Month!
