Typical vs. Maximal Performance

If I were in the shoes of a business owner I would choose to hire Jaime because I prefer consist, decent work, over great work once in a while and slacking the rest of the time. I don’t think it’s fair to other employees to let certain people slack off when they produce wonderful work when it’s “necessary”. It is always necessary to work to the best of your ability and I feel like by letting this behavior occur, it would set this new standard of being allowed to work hard only when you want to and that is not the way I would want to run my business.

I think that the best position for someone with really high potential, but low consistency is a homicide detective. Unless there is a case in progress, homicide detectives don’t have to really work or do much, but when a case pops up, it is all hands on deck and super high pressure. I think someone like Avery would be perfect for this job because he is such a high performer under pressure. He can relax during the time that there are no cases and slack all he wants, then spring into action when a case comes through and excel at what he does. Jaime wouldn’t fit in this job because it requires someone that does really well under pressure and gives 110%. He tends to be more relaxed and consistent and doesn’t perform the best when the pressure is on.

The best position for someone like Jaime who is very low potential, but high consistency, is a delivery truck driver. Delivery truck drivers have almost no high pressure situations, so it is low stress and doesn’t require a lot of brain power. All Jaime would have to do is show up for work every day, on time, and get the deliveries out. Avery would not fit this position because he works so much better in high pressure situations that he would not be able to maximize his potential at a job like this.
