Discrimination

Is My Money Not Green

One of the things that I like to think is that I am ok at is choosing what companies to shop at. I think that people often talk a big talk in the age of “cancel culture” but will refuse to back it up with action, the best way for a company to get the message that you are angry at them is to not use their product/service. To offer a story about this I love fried chicken, would eat it every day if I still had my high school metabolism, that being said I will never eat at a chick-fil-a because they in the past discriminated against the LGBTQ+ community, and the response/action that the company has released in the years have paled in comparison to the actions that they took in supporting anti-LGBTQ+ charities.

Rockslides started as one rock

One of the more interesting topics that was brought up in class that I felt real is in line with the issue above is the idea of “it was just one employee….” and I feel that this is one of the strongest and weakest responses to a company scandal surrounding a protected class. Sure I am sure that there is some story where it was just one employee who slipped through the cracks however even one person if they are high enough in the company can cause many problems for a company(We Work, Pinterest, Fox News, Johnson & Johnson,…). Well, those are examples of cases where it was only one person, many more of these incidents in recent years involve multiple people and people who have been indoctrinated, even if subconscious, in a culture of discriminatory practices.

Should morals have a price

I think that the way a company handles and the way that they choose to conduct themselves not only in the business world but also outside of it says a lot about the character of their board of directors and the company’s overall strategy. When applying to a company I think that the way they conduct themselves outside of the business world is very important, for example, this is why I would never work for or support Nestle. They are a book villain made real. However, I think that with proper atonement I could find myself working for a company that has made mistakes in the past.
