Job Application Experience

My most recent experience in the application process for a government facility/agency.

Building exterior in Toronto, Canada

I recently applied for a job as a project director at a government facility. The position perfectly aligns with my skills and interests, and I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to the company’s growth. However, applying for this position is quite challenging and time-consuming, often stretching up to 18 months before an official job offer is made. Despite this, I was hoping to hear back with good news.

I waited anxiously for several months, hoping to receive positive news, but unfortunately, I received a disheartening rejection email. The email lacked specific reasons for not selecting me, leaving me frustrated and confused. Seeking constructive feedback, I reached out to the hiring team, but regrettably, my attempts were met with complete silence. I’m feeling incredibly frustrated and disheartened because I’m at a loss as to what specific qualifications or skills I may be lacking for this position, and I’m unsure how to enhance my abilities to become a stronger candidate. This uncertainty does not settle well with me, and I wish I had more insight into what I need to do to improve my prospects.

Following this experience, my overall impression of this government facility has significantly diminished. As a result, I have become disinterested in pursuing employment there, given the apparent standard of their business operations. It is evident that this agency likely handles a high volume of applications that go through an initial AI filter. This leads me to wonder about the percentage of rejected applicants who actively seek constructive feedback after being filtered out. I suspect that only a few applicants pursue this kind of feedback. I have since begun to look for similar jobs at other government agencies.
