Peace Health Southwest Medical Center
My Mom has worked at the Peace Health Southwest Medical Center for over 20 years now. With my Dad’s company, she has never truly needed to work, but still, she has. I believe when my little sister and I were much younger, my Mom chose to work in order to keep herself busy while we were in school and at our sports practices all day long. She would spend the extra income on extra fun things-shopping, vacations, cosmetic upkeeps, and things of the sort.
In addition, my Mom has found that working for the hospital as an individual who preps patients for surgery, runs EKGs, draws blood, and of course does a lot of paperwork, that the insurance benefits and plan are very valuable. There have been times where my she considered quitting her job, but she holds on because of the insurance deal. This has ended up working out well in our families’ favor as, my sister and I growing up gymnasts, there were lots of broken bones and injuries along the way.
After my parents got a divorce, the reason for my Mom working shifted from working simply for a little extra spending money and insurance to needing to pay for her own bills. She realized that she hated working there, and cut back to part-time (still staying for the insurance benefits.)
This makes me think about the simulation, and the options to offer generous insurance packages. Although my team did not choose to utilize those heavily, I can see, from my Mom’s situation, how locking in an insurance plan could help reduce turnover and allow for more employees to stay loyal and committed to working for a company.
