Does a Job Description Matter?

Looking for jobs can be one of the most difficult things to do as everyone has their own definition of their ideal or dream job for their current scenario. Multiple factors come to play such as salary, the field of interest, hours, and benefits. But how do companies sell applicants on working for them? The simple answer is job descriptions.

If we look at the article Job Worth Doing, Jill Bidwell, who is considered one of the best at developing job descriptions, claims that “what is put in the job description can create job posting and performance goals” as well as ” have so much value if used regularly and appropriately” (Tyler 3-4). I believe this interpretation to be fairly accurate as looking through job descriptions will help me decide if I want to apply or eventually work at a firm.

Updating the job descriptions seems difficult as job responsibilities don’t normally change unless new policies are in place. Reverting back to the article, not updating job descriptions can aid employees rather than the company, which in turn would cause the company to lose money in the long run and would send the efficiency of the company into a downward spiral.

After reviewing this week’s learning materials, it is very apparent that updating and having a job description is an overlooked part of running a business. Without job descriptions, companies would not get applicants and the employees that do work for these companies, can use updated responsibilities to their advantage and give companies bad reputations or even force them to close dow. The next time I get hired for a job, Ill be sure to see if the description is updated every so often.
