Like every human being, these interviews made me extremely nervous, and it was always easy to stick to my pre-determined game plan and pre decided answers to some questions I assumed the interviewers would ask. One thing I am sur of is that the interviews I took part in that had a relaxed an unstructured feel made me feel comfortable enough to really divulge the attractive information I had to share in a confident way. When interviewers go off the beaten path and try to get to know me as a person instead of a candidate, I have found that I leave those interviews feeling confident and happy about the whole process. I have part taken in interviews that have had a very concrete structure and when I am asked a question, I am hesitant about, it leaves all parties involved feeling a bit awkward when I give them an adhoc answer to their structured question.

While I personally feel that unstructured interviews have worked best for me in the past, reading these weeks learning material gave me some food for thought regarding how interviews should be conducted by the hiring party. In the article “How to Take the Bias Out of Interviews” the author goes on to talk about the short comings of the beloved unstructured interview and why it is important to set control answers and some interview structure. While unstructured interviews are a traditional way to get to know applicants and break the awkwardness of interviews, they are also fraught with personal bias and lack basic tests to gage an applicant’s understanding of what they will be doing if hired on. It was eye opening to me that the interviews that I found myself so confident and comfortable in fundamentally lacked what the hiring company wants when conducting new hire interviews, structured questions, work-sample tests, and control answers to gage how each applicant is doing compared to the others.

Over my short student-worker career at Oregon state University, I have part taken in 5 interviews for an intern position for either a general contractor or a subcontractor.
