International HRM Scenario

After completing college and being successful in multiple positions across the U.S., an opportunity has come up for me to move abroad and pursue a career in international human resources management having anywhere in the world as an option for my destination spot, I have chosen to work in the United Kingdom. The UK is highly touted for its work in resource management and as a soccer fan, the work balance life benefits for me seem unparalleled.

According to globalscholarships.com, the UK is “the world’s second-largest business center, the UK also innovates in keeping employees satisfied and protected. HR management actively looks for competent young professionals” (par. 3). As a successful young professional, this option seemed like a no brainer as being a protected work would give me more comfort in doing well in my job. If I look at this opportunity and align it with Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, I know I would be going to an individualist environment, much like the U.S., which would be suitable since I can put myself first and don’t have a family to worry about yet. The other dimension I would mainly be concerned about would be if the job was long or short term but that all depends on how much I would grow in the company.

All in all, the U.K. human resources management system doesn’t seem to differ too much in regards to employee value and help systems and the only thing that might make me feel out of place in Britain would be my being American. I think I would end up taking this opportunity based on how successful the U.K. HRM is and who knows where the opportunity would take me.
