{"id":49,"date":"2020-01-04T00:46:41","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T00:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2020-03-18T20:36:48","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T20:36:48","slug":"standards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/basics\/standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Standards for Working with Youth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The following guidelines represent broadly accepted standards of care for youth.\u00a0 <strong>Deviation from these best practices requires clearly documented justification and approval from the program sponsor or department head. <\/strong>See <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/appendices\/c\/\">Appendix C<\/a> for current <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/appendices\/c\/\">Youth Safety Standards of Behavior Form<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employees and volunteers who perform functions or duties that regularly require interaction with minors in a private setting or without direct supervision on-site <strong>must <\/strong>successfully complete a criminal history check through OSU&#8217;s Office of Human Resources. A link to the form can be found in <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/appendices\/a\/\">Appendix A<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Employees and volunteers who meet the above criteria and work with youth on an ongoing basis <strong>must <\/strong>have a new criminal history check every two years.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Faculty, staff, and volunteers who work with youth <strong>must <\/strong>have adequate training to perform their duties. Adequate training will vary depending on the duties of the position. For more information and examples, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/training\/\">Orientation and Training<\/a> section of this manual.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li>The use of physical contact for disciplinary measures is <strong>NOT <\/strong>allowed.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li>All youth program faculty, staff and volunteers are <strong>required <\/strong>to report suspected child abuse. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/abuse\/\">Responding to Suspected Child Abuse<\/a> section of this manual.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\"><li>Registered Sex Offenders (RSOs) are <strong>NOT <\/strong>allowed to have contact with youth in the context of a university activity. See <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/youthsafety\/appendices\/a#conditions\">Appendix A &#8211; Conditions of Volunteer Service<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"7\"><li>Sponsoring units <strong>must <\/strong>register youth activities with the Office of Youth Safety &amp; Compliance.
