Health and safety specifically in the workplace is very important. About 2.8% of workers are injured at their workplace every year, and 80-90% of injuries are caused by human error.
Training is very important to prevent injury in the workplace, proper knowledge of how to use equipment, lift weight, and etc. is very important. At my hospital we have specialists in equipment come and train employees on any new equipment we are getting, so that it can prevent injuries. Also, 2 Thursday’s a month all employees get training on a specific topic, or talk about specific topics relating to the department.
Mental health is also very important. Especially in workplaces of high stress. My hospital offers a code lavender program, where employees in distress are offered a professional who will talk to them about the situation that caused the mental health breakdown. Another option we have available is when for example a patient passes away in the department, people who were on the care team will get together and also talk everything through, what went well, what needs to change, what was hard, etc.
I’m conclusion I believe training is good to prevent any physical health and safety issues to an employee, while having the option to talk to and being taught of how to handle stress is very important to help with mental health and safety in the workplace.
