When trying to decide where I would like to live for the next stage of my life I considered a lot of different factors of countries. I thought about Norway, Switzerland, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. However I settled on Iceland because of its beautiful landscape and some of the differences in its Hofstede dimensions compared to that of the United States. I have enjoyed living in the United States, but Americans tend to have the mentality of “Living to Work” and it seems that most people only care about how successful they are at their Job. This is the characteristics of a Masculine society, which is driven my competition and there being only 1 winner in the end. Iceland is the opposite, a Feminine society, because of is want to better everyone in its community. Iceland has a culture of “Working in order to Live”, so they value quality of life and flexibility of their hours in the workplace. This is something I value more than being successful in my career. I would prefer to have more flexible hours so I can enjoy time outside hiking, playing sports, or hanging out with friends. Iceland is one of the happiest countries in the world because they value being happy and having the most relaxed quality of life. Other than that the United States and Iceland are comparable in their cultural dimensions. Both cultures are individualistic, have a low power distance with the US being slightly higher, don’t deal with unknown future well, and they both indulge in their impulses when given the opportunity. I would love to take a job in another country simply because I want to try new things and would be open to immersing myself in a whole new culture.
