It’s undeniable that HR management plays a crucial role in every career and industry. Hospitality, being a service industry, is obligated to put people first in order for the business to thrive. Performance and operations depend on people.
Humans equal to “Product”
After researching a few globally leading companies in hospitality such as Hilton, Marriott, and IHG Hotels & Resorts. I found that the main objective of any company in this industry is to create an excellent hospitality experience for customers. Beyond luxury facilities, human is their treasure, as these individuals are the ones delivering the “product” through their services.
Interestingly, when looking at employee demographics at these top companies, I found that 30%–40% of employees have been with their company for less than two years. This group makes up the largest portion of the workforce across all three organizations. As tenure increases, the percentage of employees in each department tends to drop. That said, people seem to stay with the company for a few years before seeking other opportunities elsewhere.
Management Strategies
According to greatplacetowork.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts value their people, embrace change, and manage risks. Hilton’s values slightly differ from the other two companies, as they emphasize team, family, and social responsibility. These values reflect how each company approaches its HR management strategies. From my research, Hilton’s approach seems aligned with its organizational strategy, as they focus on being socially responsible by giving back to communities. On the other hand, IHG and Marriott select strategies based on the organizational capabilities they need, particularly in areas such as talent development and digital transformation. Theses strategies make the companies stand out for investors.
My personal take
I would like to be a manager who puts employees first. I believe that when management takes care of their employees, it sets both the employees and the business up for success. However, I understand that this isn’t always easy to achieve. Creating business identity as an socially responsible organization is very interesting and I believe that is probably a new for business that uses a lot of resources like hotel.
