Blog Post Week 3

Overall, I think this week really opened my eyes to what design thinking truly is. Yes, it’s a design based major. Yes, when I tell someone I’m a design and innovation management major I don’t exactly know how to go more in depth. Now, however, I know why I’m studying in this field. To unite creative thinkers from all kinds of different disciplines. Bringing together graphic designers and computer scientists or chefs and biologists. Post #1: How and Why?

I think the main things I took from this week was the fact that a designer must ask how and why first before doing anything, and along with that, the how usually outweighs the why. This seems quite negative to me, yet I do see this in everyday life. When I see impressive art or design the first thing I ask is “How did they create that?”, when in reality I should be looking at “Why did they create that?”. Was it simply a job? did a machine create it? Did they struggle with it? This brings us into a much more in depth critical thinking process that is necessary3 to design thinking.
