After taking a look at the prompt for this week’s discussion, I had to look back on my previous work experience as an equipment manager for the Oregon State Football team during my sophomore year here. As a student manager, the compensation was not enough of a motivating factor to be invested in the team or work because it was only $400 a month.
Going into the interview for the job, the compensation was not a thought that had crossed my mind because I was just eager to work with a sports organization, and contribute in a meaningful way. About midway through the season, it had become clear to me that the work we were being paid to do as student managers was not near minimum wage when it came down to it. In fact, we sat around and did the math on how much we were making per hour, and it ended up around $2.15 an hour. The university was not willing to give up more for multiple hours of work. This in turn decreased my motivation to stick with the crew because I felt as though my rights were being infringed upon. Overall, I left the the job because it did not have a negotiation factor when it came to wages because the compensation was ran through the university.
