Compensation

A time when compensation affected my efforts at work was when I was a top producer, going above and beyond my performance metrics, yet I still got the same 2-3 percent raise that people barely meeting their metrics were getting. This left me feeling discouraged, and after the third year of seeing this pattern, it significantly affected the effort I put into my role. I noticed myself start stressing less on my performance and doing well enough to still be above average without much effort while receiving the same annual raises as when I was overproducing. After seeing year after year with no big impact on my income, I decided to put my efforts into ensuring I can meet all qualifications to advance my position in order to get a promotion that will largely increase my annual income. I began to notice myself engaged again with the aim of this potential compensation being in the near future. Shortly after, I was promoted, which increased my compensation and led to my overall daily efforts increasing significantly in my new role. Having my compensation increased and my responsibilities increased gave me the needed motivation to increase my productivity, set clear goals, and align my focus to maximizing my efforts. The level of effort and commitment I had after the promotion that increased my annual pay compared to my previous yearly pay and receiving 2-3 percent raises was a dramatic difference in the type of employee it made me and the quality of my work as well.
