How to Improve a Companies Job Description

When trying to set up the Job Description in an attempt to attract new hires to the company, there are many things that a person must consider about both the company they are working for as well as the type of workers they are trying to attract with the description before they can make a complete description. This takes place in the process of Job Analysis, which focuses on work done and the characteristics needed by the employees to ensure it is done in an efficient manner (1).

It is important to note that as said by Jill Bidwell, an HR manager at Sauer-Danfoss (2), that the description for a job is the first thing both potential and future employees interact with before contacting the company. This shows the importance of the document due to the impression it gives people, which can be the deciding factor of whether an efficient employee pursues a career at the company or not. The challenge with knowing what to put in the document comes from the fact that the needs of the company is always evolving, while the document displaying what is needed might not get improved as quickly.

The job description should contain the specific skills that one would need to fully understand the position, which will allow for the person in charge of the hiring process to get it done in a timely matter due to the unqualified applications rarely being sent in. After the skills and qualifications are written out, it is necessary to clarify how these skills will be used withing the company. It is important that while the explanations are detailed to show the scope of work required, it is also straightforward enough to clarify any questions that the person applying has. As stated by

Overall, a job description is meant to attract employees while ensuring that those that are not qualified don’t cause hiring managers to waste time through direct information of what’s required and what will be expected while working there. This information must be updated to match the changes that frequently happen withing the company and the economy.
