Week 10 Blog Post

The most important concept from this class to me was week 4 on recruitment. Looking at how to effectively recruit the best candidates and also how to evaluate you recruitment methods in order to understand whether they are successful or not. Learning about the characteristics of effective recruitment ads was one of the most interesting things I read/watched all term. This isn’t just important for the employers but also the employees because if I as an applicant can identify good job ads it may mean that the job and company would be good to work for. Making sure to include a good description of the job and the company is key. This to me, is the selling point for qualified candidates. Being able to sell candidates on the company is what creates a good culture and grows the company. Failure to effectively describe the organization and the job can lead to bad hires and slow the growth of the company. Another thing that I took away from this was being able to explain the selection process to applicants. If you can’t explain how the process works then you can’t know if it is effective. If people start to perceive the company as not fair in regards to their hiring process than top candidates will not apply. This goes with being able to evaluate whether or not your recruitment strategy is effective. There are a number of ways you can do this but the key one for me is the number of quality applicants generated by the source. So looking at the add itself, whether it is online ad, campus recruiter, media ad etc then seeing how many top candidates applied is how you see whether it is a good ad or could need some improvement. Recruitment strategies to me seems like the most important thing when it comes to hiring new employees. This is what makes or breaks your company. Bad hires can tank you and good hires can take you to new heights.
