Effective Training

Throughout my life, in various work environments, I have been the beneficiary of a lot of different training. I’m very grateful that I have had the privilege of getting to experience all the high-quality training that I have received. However, I have also been the recipient of some training that was rather ineffective. When I reflect on training that was very effective the first thing that comes to mind is concrete sawing training that I received when I first started at a concrete sawing company several years ago. According to the class materials in Management 453 at Oregon State University, this type of training would be classified as job and technical training (Training 2024). The way this training worked was my foreman would explain how to do the task at hand and the technique necessary, then I would attempt it, and he would correct me until I got it right. Once I had figured it out, I would do the task repeatedly. I felt that this training was very effective because I was practicing the skills that I was being taught immediately after being instructed on what to do. This really reinforced what I needed to do and cemented the pathways necessary for retaining the knowledge. At the same company that I just mentioned I also received some training that was rather ineffective. This training was computer-based safety training that was required for certain jobsites that were more dangerous than others. This training was in presentation style and would be classified as required and regular training (Training 2024). I felt that this training was ineffective because it was very repetitive and there was no practical application. At the end of the day, I feel that almost all the training I have received has benefited me in one way or another. But when I reflect and think about training that really helped me learn I feel that training that involves practicing the skills immediately after being instructed has helped me learn the most.
