The Capstone Begins

Well, I finally made it to the end of the Post-Bacc computer science program (as long as I pass this capstone and another class) and it feels great. So I think I’ll write a little about myself and how I got here and finish with the projects I think look interesting and fun.

Up until the end of last year, I worked in the medical industry in a hospital. I’ve worked as a nurse assistant which was tough and physically demanding. The patients were usually very nice and grateful but hospitals love to understaff which I noticed was a theme as I moved around and was part of the reason for leaving healthcare. Next, I worked as a scribe in the ER where I would write the charts for the doctors. ERs are hectic but you see and hear some very interesting things so be glad for HIPPA laws because everyone in the ER has an interesting story they just can’t tell. Lastly, I ended my healthcare career working as a medical technologist. I was the person in the back running tests on your blood and other body fluids. Looking at blood under a microscope was always interesting and again you might see something you’ve never seen before but I decided to take a bold leap into a new career in computer science and began studying in 2020.

Like many of the rest of you in this program I worked full time while completing courses and in the last year have been lucky enough to now study full time in order to complete the degree. In my free time i’ve created small games using both pygame and more recently the godot engine. I worked with my brother to try and recreate the Death Angel card game that we both enjoy. Its on the back burner currently with the start of school but I hope to get back to it.

So this brings me to the projects that I think look interesting. While I don’t necessarily see myself going into game development I do find it enjoyable. I may be a softie for old classic games so having the chance to recreate one is what I think I’ll be looking for. The space invaders in AR/VR look fun but with my experience in the networks class, I think online multiplayer asteroids might be fun too.

Well, I look forward to this semester and working with you all. So cheers to a hopefully great term and end to a great degree program.
