They’re generally better for employees and less desirable for employers. According to “Environmental Conscience,” an online blog which “aims to make the world a little bit better,” labor unions help provide higher wages, worker protections, increased benefits, flexibility for workers, greater voice for workers in decision-making, collective bargaining opportunities, right to strike, and general equality amongst workers. These benefits are largely skewed in favor of employees, as unions are composed of employees seeking fairer working conditions. This generally places many of the disadvantages on the employers, including increased difficulty firing ineffective employees, increased costs, loss of good employees, and a dependence of outcomes on the negotiation skills of the union representatives.

I found many of the articles regarding the pros and cons of labor unions to be much more favorable to unions than the lecture notes. I felt that there was a definite favor in the lector notes toward the employer point of view, which I found to be a valuable contrast to the many pro-union arguments I see. Nonetheless, I’m still pretty significantly pro-union. I think that unions are an essential tool in protection and advocacy for employees and are critical to ensuring that there are regulations and policies to protect workers. I would absolutely join a labor union – I would love to be a part of the movement to secure and protect workers’ rights, especially in a society and job market dominated by greedy, wealthy capitalists.

Reference:

29 Key Pros & Cons Of Labor Unions

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to labor unions.
