Blog Post #2: Favorite piece of tech from the capstone project

Hello fellow unaccomplished yet aspiring game developers. The Unity game engine has by far been my favorite piece of technology from our capstone project… because it’s free!

Just kidding.
There’s actually quite a few reasons Unity has been a blast to use besides it being free for personal use.

I had used the Unity Engine in the past mainly to learn a bit more about C# and to have fun while doing it. There was something about learning to code while also being able to apply that code to something practical like a Galaga clone.

When we were assigned the HTML 2D tower defense game I immediately began research ways to make HTML 5 games and other started exploring different toolkits and 2D game engines.

I was blown away to learn that you can create your game (3D or 2D) in Unity, and then target whatever platform you would like to deploy the game onto. This could be android, iphone, (even blackberry!), playstation, xbox, linux, mac, etc. This also included HTML5.

In addition to making it very easy to export and deploy the game on any platform, Unity has a huge following of users and tutorials online that are available for any genre of game you want to make, or feature you want to implement. Unity assets are also plentiful and available for purchase. Need a 3D model of a street lamp for your game? Done. Need an explosion? Also, Done.

You can even use Unity to create a game and then go on to make revenue without needing to upgrade your license until you pass the $100k in revenue mark.
