How effective is training
I have always judged companies based on how well their training programs were structured for new employees. I’ve experienced two types of training such as regular training and technical training. The regular training that I’ve experienced should have been technical training due to the type of equipment being used. United Foods’ onboarding process had nothing to do with the position that I was training for. The real training started once you arrived at the warehouse where another employee was randomly picked to train you. There was no training design and this company lacked any type of training structure for new employees whatsoever. I have never felt so unprepared in my entire life. Little did I know the turnover rate at this organization was ridiculously high and I found out why. This company sets its employees up for failure and I don’t think they knew.
The other company called AT&T was a great company when it came to training design or structure. AT&T’s technical training was over a 4-week span where the training sessions were instructed by previous employees who once did the job you’re training for. That’s great news right because the instructors could give you more insight into the position and possible issues that could arise on the job site. Part of the training course consisted of weekly goals that had to be met before you could proceed to the next level of training. The actual training facility looked like a miniature high school with telephone pole yards where employees learned how to climb poles. I could tell that AT&T put a lot of money into their training program for their employees to succeed. AT&T went as far as having mockup apartments where we would learn how to properly run wire and make connections from the telephone pole if we needed to. We were trained for every possible problem that may or will happen in the field as a wire technicians. I have never felt so prepared in my life for a position that I applied for, the training was magnificent and it successfully prepared me for the real deal.
