This page is an attempt to organize the results of my quest to photograph every organism on Earth in its native habitat (only 9 million Eukaryotes and a couple Prokaryotes to go!). Since this effort reminded me of a #realworldPokedex, that’s what I decided to call it. I’ve uploaded a few thousand photos en masse to my Pokédex Flickr album, and am choosing from those photos one organism per day to add to this list and post to my Instagram feed. I’m also trying to keep track of the organisms I’ve mentioned in this blog. Click on an organism’s common name to see a description of it and its name in Spanish, French, and Dutch. Clicking the scientific name will return that organism’s full taxonomy.

The Ponderosa pine has three long needles in each fascicle, and the other most common Oregonian pine (the lodgepole) has only two short ones. Note: yes, this tree has 'pine needles', and the cones from this tree are 'pine cones', but please don't go calling the needles and cones from fir or spruce trees anything other than fir or spruce needles and cones!! The berries are technically edible but don't look very appetizing so I've never tried them. | 59496 | Yes | No
Rubus spectabilis Rubus spectabilis taxonomy: × Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Viridiplantae Phylum: Magnoliophyta (Angiosperms) Class: Eudicots (clade: Rosid) Order: Rosales Family: Rosaceae | Salmonberry Salmonberry×Español: zarza naranja Français: ronce remarquable, ronce admirable Nederlands: prachtframboos The genus Rubus includes the well-known blackberries and raspberries as well as the less-well-known dewberries, thimbleberries, and some other berries. Salmonberries belong to this group, and although they're not all that tasty, I like the unique orange color of the berry (reminiscent of salmon eggs) and beautiful purple color of their flowers. And they still make a good filler in wild berry jams! | 59499 | Yes | No
Varanus gouldii Varanus gouldii taxonomy: × Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Metazoa Phylum: Chordata Class: Reptilia Order: Squamata Family: Varanidae | Sand Goanna, Gould's Goanna Sand Goanna, Gould's Goanna×Español: varano de Gould Français: varan de Gould Nederlands: Goulds varaan Called the bungarra in local languages, the goanna is a species of monitor lizard and in the same genus as the much larger Komodo dragon. Sure, it can get to greater than 25 ft. tall, but usually even then it's got all sorts of bushy, thin branches that make it look more bush-like to me. Its certainly a beautiful addition to the Pacific Northwest understory. | 66207 | Yes | No
Adenium obesum Adenium obesum taxonomy: × Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Viridiplantae Phylum: Magnoliophyta (Angiosperms) Class: Eudicots (clade: Asterid) Order: Gentianales Family: Apocynaceae | Desert Rose Desert Rose×Español: rosa del desierto Français: rose du désert Nederlands: woestijnroos Belonging to the same family as the New World's Plumerias, these plants are so unique-looking and beautiful. | 69375 | Yes | No

Acropora nobilis (robusta) Acropora nobilis (robusta) taxonomy: × Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Metazoa Phylum: Cnidaria Class: Anthozoa (subclass: Hexacorallia) Order: Scleractinia (complex clade) Family: Acroporidae | Noble Staghorn Coral Noble Staghorn Coral×Español: coral cuerno de ciervo Français: corail corne de cerf Nederlands: staghornkoraal A branching acroporid found in the Indo-Pacific, with slightly more robust branches and finer corallites than the more common A. formosa. Using Corals of the World as my guide, I feel pretty comfortable calling this coral Acropora nobilis. However, WoRMS tells me that's an invalid name, and that I should instead call this Acropora robusta. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The Acropora genus of corals is pretty messy because it has all sorts of strange cross fertilization patterns and morphological plasticity. That's one reason we are trying not to rely too heavily on visual species identification for the GCMP, and are instead using genetics to build our own phylogenetic trees. | 70781 | Yes
Gaultheria shallon Gaultheria shallon taxonomy: × Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Viridiplantae Phylum: Magnoliophyta (Angiosperms) Class: Eudicots (clade: Asterid) Order: Ericales Family: Ericaceae | Salal Salal×Español: Gaultheria shallon Français: Gaultheria shallon Nederlands: Gaultheria shallon There's nothing terribly special that I know about Gaultheria shallon, but I've always liked it. It's always a nice, deep green, and an evergreen, so along with the sword ferns it keeps Oregon's coastal forests nice even during the winter. It's got an edible berry that also is nothing to write home about but makes a good filler in wild berry jams. | 73102 | Yes | No

Without coral reefs, by the way, many mangrove habitats would disappear, because they require the calm lagoonal water that coral structures create. | 82927 | Yes | No

Of course, that is still a concern - reefs that have already been hit by hurricanes and climate change-induced bleaching will apparently just have to suck it up when the seastars roll around. Also, the spines on these guys are slightly venomous and will deliver a whopper of a hurt if you step on them. They're just all-around mean. But beautiful. | 133434 | Yes
