Original graphic (Monica Whipple and David Turner).\u00a0 Image Credits: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawpixel.com\/image\/6069741\/free-public-domain-cc0-photo\">Circuitry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Middelgrunden_wind_farm_2009-07-01_edit_filtered.jpg\">Wind Farm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hippopx.com\/en\/alternative-blue-cell-clean-eco-ecological-ecology-379698\">Solar Panels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vecteezy.com\/free-vector\/electricity-pylon\">Pylons<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When the sheriff character in the original \u201cJaws\u201d movie first sees the giant shark, he exclaims to the captain \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qCzncv0ISaE\">You\u2019re gonna need a bigger boat<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An analogous statement regarding the energy requirements associated with the coming proliferation of conversational virtual beings (based on Artificial Intelligence) is that the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/technosphere\/2020\/01\/10\/discovery-of-the-technosphere\/\">technosphere<\/a> is going to need a bigger power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By virtual beings I mean all the digital, language-capable, denizens of the emerging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cathyhackl\/2021\/05\/02\/defining-the-metaverse-today\/?sh=83d87aa64485\">metaverse<\/a> (broadly defined), including chatbots (like <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/chatgpt\/\">ChatGPT<\/a>), AI-assisted search engines (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/\">Perplexity AI<\/a>), and AI-based residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2022\/12\/metas-progress-in-augmented-and-virtual-reality\/\">Meta\u2019s visor-enable virtual reality world<\/a>.&nbsp; Coming down the line are speaking holograms, and holodecks (as in Star Trek).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The process by which these advanced digital creatures learn to speak is based on development of neural networks that are trained with a large body of textural information (like Wikipedia, books, and an array of content available on the Internet).&nbsp; Training means determining statistical relationships between the occurrence of different words in the training text, which the algorithm then uses to formulate a response based on keyword inputs (queries).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Training a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/28\/the-emerging-types-of-language-models-and-why-they-matter\/\">large language model<\/a> such as ChatGPT requires a hefty input of computing power because it involves <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/it-takes-a-lot-of-energy-for-machines-to-learn-heres-why-ai-is-so-power-hungry-151825\">extensive trial and error testing<\/a>.&nbsp; Chatbots affiliated with AI-assisted Internet searches use not just a pre-trained language model but also integrate the search output into their responses.&nbsp; This kind of processing will be energy demanding (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-microsoft-ai-search-war-will-add-to-carbon-emissions-2023-2\">perhaps 5 times greater than for a standard search<\/a>), which will add up considering the billions of searches made per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If these virtual beings were only going to be used by a minority of people (such as now visit Meta\u2019s colony in the metaverse), the power draw would be minor.\u00a0 But, very likely, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/02\/16\/microsoft-bing-ai-chat-interview\/\">seductive appeal<\/a> will be so great (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/02\/16\/microsoft-bing-ai-chatbot-sydney\/\">albeit with an occasional hint of menace<\/a>) that they will become a standard feature of ordinary life.\u00a0 Just in the <a href=\"https:\/\/yellow.ai\/chatbots\/use-cases-of-chatbots-in-education-industry\/\">field of education<\/a>, there is vast potential for inspiring and informing students using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticalthinking.org\/data\/pages\/31\/75b0624ef03956ca540026f3bd0884b85136312571895.pdf\">dialogic<\/a> Chatbots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ai.googleblog.com\/2022\/02\/good-news-about-carbon-footprint-of.html\">Efficiency in training and operation<\/a> of these virtual beings will no doubt increase, but industry specialists see a booming <a href=\"https:\/\/semiengineering.com\/ai-power-consumption-exploding\/\">rise in electrical energy demand as their use expands<\/a>.&nbsp; Note that electrical power demand for electric vehicles, and to power the broader trend towards electrification of heating and industry, will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2020\/01\/09\/electric-cars-will-challenge-state-power-grids\">rise significantly in the coming decades<\/a> (a good thing!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fraw.org.uk\/data\/limits\/rees_2020.pdf\">overshoot model<\/a> argues that global energy consumption should be reduced rather than expanded because of the many <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.p2pfoundation.net\/Externalization_of_Costs\">negative environmental externalities<\/a> (unaccounted for damages) caused by energy production&nbsp; \u0336&nbsp; from both fossil fuel and renewable sources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, at least for electricity, that seems unlikely given the burgeoning energy demand in the developed world noted here, and the aspiration to raise standards of living in the developing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capp.ca\/energy\/world-energy-needs\/\">66%<\/a> of global electricity production is still based on combustion on fossil fuels, any increase in electricity consumption will tend to result in more greenhouse gas emissions and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climatechange-science\/impacts-climate-change\">societal problems with climate change<\/a>.&nbsp; The obvious conclusion in that new energy demand must be met by nonfossil fuel sources like hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, and nuclear fission.&nbsp; Companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.google\/commitments\/carbon\/\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/16\/microsoft-will-be-carbon-negative-by-2030\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.fb.com\/climate\/\">Meta<\/a> that are building the metaverse will experience huge increases in energy consumption in the near future; they should be held to their commitments to run on carbon neutral power sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">New energy technologies that could contribute to a clean global power supply in the coming decades include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewablematter.eu\/articles\/article\/natural-hydrogen-a-geological-curiosity-or-the-primary-energy-source-for-a-low-carbon-future\">geologic hydrogen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/11\/solar-farms-in-space-electricity-to-earth-energy-climate-change\">solar energy from space<\/a>.&nbsp; These sources, however, will require long-term investments in research and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The global renewable energy revolution is <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/ada7af90-e280-46c4-a577-df2e4fb44254\/Renewables2022.pdf\">off to a good start<\/a> and has a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-99031-2_9\">bright future<\/a>, but it will require steady political pressure to 1) stop building new fossil fuel burning facilities, 2) replace aging fossil-fuel-based infrastructure with renewable sources, and 3) build new renewable energy sources that can accommodate the increasing demand that is surely coming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David P.
