Turner \/ April 22, 2025 (update)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1-1024x714.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-924\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1-1024x714.png 1024w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1-768x535.png 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1-431x300.png 431w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3635\/files\/2024\/01\/fig-1.png 1029w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Figure 1.&nbsp; Projections of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions and concentration.&nbsp; Image Credit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/media\/14617\">NOAA<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, a remarkable speculation circulated in the cybersphere to the effect that global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) from fossil fuel combustion may&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/global-emissions-peaked-in-2019-as-pandemic-hastens-energy-transition-8211-report-60943685\">have peaked in 2019<\/a>.&nbsp; Considering that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab57b3\/pdf\">recent formal projections<\/a>&nbsp;generally indicated increasing emissions through 2030 or longer, this assertion was striking.&nbsp; It matters because CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions determine the growth in the atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;concentration, which in turn influences the magnitude of global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;concentration is currently around 425 ppm (up from a preindustrial value of around 280 ppm) and is rising at a rate of 2-3 ppm per year.&nbsp; The consensus among climate scientists is that rapid greenhouse-gas-driven climate change will be harmful to the human enterprise on Earth.&nbsp; It would be good news indeed if&nbsp;CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions were on the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estimates for annual global CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions\u00a0are produced by assembling data on consumption of coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as data on production of cement and effects of land use.\u00a0 The sum of fossil fuel and cement emissions is termed Fossil Fuel &amp; Industry emissions (FF&amp;I).\u00a0 Land use, land use change, and forestry (LULUCF) is mostly the net effect of carbon emissions from deforestation and carbon sequestration from afforestation\/reforestation.\u00a0 Total anthropogenic emissions are the net of FF&amp;I and LULUCF.\u00a0 Two independent estimates of CO<sub>2<\/sub> sources and sinks (<a href=\"https:\/\/essd-17-965-2025.pdf\">GCP<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2025\">IEA<\/a>) differ slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suggestion that peak fossil fuel emissions occurred in 2019 held true in 2020 and again in 2021 and 2022, but <a href=\"https:\/\/essd.copernicus.org\/articles\/15\/5301\/2023\/\">2023 saw a 1.1% increase over 2019<\/a>.  Emissions rose another 0.8% in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intriguingly, a decline in LULUCF compensated for the increase in fossil emissions such that total anthropogenic emissions remained the same in 2023 as 2022 (11.1 GtC yr<sup>-1<\/sup>).&nbsp; The net source was 11.3 GtC  yr<sup>-1<\/sup> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several specific observations points towards lower emissions in the near-term future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0Global coal emissions\u00a0declined from 2012 to 2019 but have risen above 2012 in recent years, primarily due to increases in <a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s37_2023_Category_India.png\">India<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s34_2023_Category_China.png\">China<\/a>.\u00a0 However, coal emissions <a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/ctry\/s20_Coal_Oil_Gas_Cement_USA_withForecast.png\">declined 18.3% in the US<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s36_2023_Category_EU27.png\">18.8% in the EU<\/a> in 2023. The declines continued in 2024. Aging coal-powered electricity plants in the U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Coal\/Natural-Gas-Has-Replaced-Over-100-US-Coal-Plants-In-The-Last-Decade.html\">are being replaced<\/a>\u00a0with plants powered by natural gas (more efficient that coal) or renewable energy.\u00a0 Some coal plants have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2020\/10\/16\/portland-general-electric-coal-boardman-power-plant\/\">prematurely retired<\/a>.\u00a0 A gradual phase out in global coal consumption is being driven by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikescott\/2020\/06\/03\/clean-power-continues-to-stretch-its-cost-benefits-over-coal\/?sh=3fd405c93b19\">price advantage of renewable energy<\/a>, impacts of coal emissions on the climate and human health, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/as-investors-and-insurers-back-away-the-economics-of-coal-turn-toxic\">reluctance of insurance companies<\/a>\u00a0to cover new coal-based power plant construction. \u00a0China has agreed to stop financing the construction of coal power plants in developing nations and India has pledged to stop approving new domestic coal burning plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Global oil demand in 2020 fell 7.6% from 2019 because of Covid-19. It partially recovered in 2021, 2022, and 2023, then in 2024 rose above the level in 2019.\u00a0 Structural changes such as reduced commuting and business-related flying mean that some of the demand reductions associated with Covid-19 have persisted.\u00a0 Vehicles powered by electricity and hydrogen rather than gasoline are on the ascendancy, sparked in part by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-announces-california-will-phase-out-gasoline-powered-cars-drastically-reduce-demand-for-fossil-fuel-in-californias-fight-against-climate-change\/\">governmental mandates<\/a>\u00a0to phase in zero emissions vehicles.  Global oil demand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodity-insights\/en\/news-research\/latest-news\/crude-oil\/101624-iea-sees-oil-supply-overhang-emerging-after-cutting-long-term-demand-projection\">may peak around 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.\u00a0 Even a near-term\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-natural-gas-demand-peak\/\">peak in natural gas consumption<\/a>, at least in the US, is being discussed.\u00a0 The GCP budget for 2022 showed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2022\/PNG\/s29_2022_Coal_Oil_Gas_Cement.png\">0.2% decline in global gas emissions<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s29_2023_Coal_Oil_Gas_Cement.png\">2023 a 0.5% increase<\/a>.\u00a0 The increase in 2024 was 2.4%.  <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalgasintel.com\/news\/what-will-natural-gas-demand-look-like-in-2050-it-depends\/\">Projections for long-term natural gas demand are highly uncertain<\/a> and subject to assumptions about national policies related to climate change mitigation.  Generally, the price advantage of renewable sources will increasingly weigh against fossil-fuel-based power plants.\u00a0 The growing importance of energy security at the national level also argues against dependence on imported fossil fuels.\u00a0 Ramped up production of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rngcoalition.com\/\">renewable natural gas<\/a>\u00a0could substitute for fossil natural gas in some applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is likely that the approaching peak in total fossil fuel use will be driven by diminishing demand rather than lack of supply.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s53_2023_airborne_fraction.png\">half of FF&amp;I emissions remain in the atmosphere<\/a>, with the remainder sequestered on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s49_2023_Global_Sources_and_Sinks.png\">land\u00a0(e.g. in vegetation and soil) and in the\u00a0ocean<\/a>.\u00a0 The land sink has been increasing in response to 1) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/technosphere\/2020\/01\/20\/land-photosynthesis-is-increasing\/\">high\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0enhancement of photosynthesis\u00a0<\/a>and plant water use efficiency, and 2) policy driven impacts on land management (e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06723-z\">more reforestation and afforestation<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2464408-air-monitoring-station-records-biggest-ever-jump-in-atmospheric-co2\/\">annual increase in the atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration for 2024<\/a> was 3.6 ppm, the largest such increase ever recorded.  This extraordinary bump up in concentration was mostly driven by drought impacts on forest carbon sources and sinks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once&nbsp;<strong>fossil fuel emissions<\/strong>&nbsp;begin decreasing and fall by half \u2212 and assuming&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1098\/rsta.2014.0421\">net effect<\/a>&nbsp;of increasing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and climate warming is still substantial carbon uptake by the land and ocean \u2212&nbsp;<strong>the atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;concentration<\/strong>&nbsp;will peak and begin to decrease.&nbsp; The year of peak CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;concentration could be as early as 2040 (see carbon cycle projection tool below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, there is plenty that might go wrong with this optimistic scenario.&nbsp; As climate change intensifies, the net effect on land and ocean sequestration could be a decline in carbon uptake.&nbsp; On land, carbon sources such as permafrost melting and forest fires will be stimulated by climate warming.&nbsp; In the ocean, warming will intensify stratification, thereby reducing carbon removal to the ocean interior.&nbsp; The steady increase in the ocean carbon sink since around 2000 has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/robbieandrew.github.io\/GCB2023\/PNG\/s54_2023_ESSD21_Fig09.png\">stalled in recent years<\/a>, for poorly understood reasons.&nbsp; If fossil fuel emissions are not significantly abated in the coming decades, the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration could still be rising in 2100 (Figure 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recommended:&nbsp; Interactive CO<sub>2<\/sub> Emissions and Concentration Projection <a href=\"https:\/\/galenmckinley.github.io\/CarbonCycle\/applet\/\">Tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is likely that the approaching peak in total fossil fuel use will be driven by diminishment of demand rather than lack of supply.
