How compensation incentivizes behavior

It is surprising how much compensation can alter our behavior and initial intentions. Everybody had a situation when they were motivated by a particular type of award. I came up with a case that is a vivid example of how compensation changed the strong position and philosophy of a person.

Firstly, this situation happened to my friend. She is an influencer with a developing blog that has approximately a thousand followers. The girl cooperated with local shops and advertised their products and services on a routine basis. However, she paid for specific orders too. Once my friend received a package with a whole different product for which she paid. Obviously, the girl told about this in the Instagram stories and gathered several cases about how the online shop confused orders. I know her as an individual with solid morals who sticks to her position. Though, this time became an exception. When the shop offered her financial compensation and free products, she deleted the stories where the girl criticized the shop.

There are several reasons for that behavior of my friend. The first reason is that every person seeks profitability all the time. When such an opportunity appears, everybody wants to take advantage of it. The second possible motive is the feeling of being unique. As I mentioned before, that shop had similar situations with other customers. However, it proposed the compensation just for my friend. This action made her feel unique, which also contributed to the behavioral switch.

After all, people who choose the refund over their principles should not be judged. It is how human nature and modern capitalistic society function – we are opportunistic and strive for more because we are brought up in such a society.
