As we head into the last few weeks of spring term, we want to highlight what our colleagues from around campus are reading. Perhaps you\u2019ll find your next summer read in the list!<\/p>\n<p>We asked colleagues, \u201cWhat have you read that has informed your work or resonated for you, and why? This can be reading in any form (e.g., books, articles, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.)\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Liz Delf, Senior Instructor, School of Writing, Literature, and Film<\/h2>\n<p><em>You\u2019re Not Listening: What You\u2019re Missing and Why It Matters<\/em> by Kate Murphy (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.oregonstate.edu\/permalink\/f\/ueodtl\/CP71315539970001451\">Valley Library<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9781250297198\/yourenotlistening\">Macmillan Publishers<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Yourenotlistening.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-427 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Yourenotlistening-202x300.png\" alt=\"Cover of the book You're Not Listening: What You're Missing and Why It Matters by Kate Murphy\" width=\"106\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Yourenotlistening-202x300.png 202w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Yourenotlistening.png 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/><\/a>Oh man, listening is hard. I am a talker! But this book convinced me that it&#8217;s worth making the effort to listen more. Murphy argues for the value of listening in relationships, friendships, workplaces, and interactions with strangers&#8230; even when you disagree. While this is a valuable area for me to improve on as a faculty member, it also made me think about how to help students listen to a range of ideas and perspectives. Surprisingly varied and enjoyable read.<\/p>\n<p><em>Know My Name<\/em> by Chanel Miller (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.oregonstate.edu\/permalink\/f\/ueodtl\/CP71334066850001451\">Valley Library<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/553663\/know-my-name-by-chanel-miller\/\">Penguin Random House<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Miller&#8217;s memoir of her assault by Brock Turner and the consequent trial is <a href=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Knowmyname.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-428 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Knowmyname-190x300.png\" alt=\"Cover of the book Know My Name by Chanel Miller\" width=\"109\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Knowmyname-190x300.png 190w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Knowmyname.png 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/a>painful\u2014but it is also nuanced, poetic, and powerful. Her insightful close readings of court transcripts are rage-inducing. It&#8217;s a fair and important critique of the institutions\u2014including the university\u2014that should have done more in the aftermath of the assault. Miller also lifts up the helpers. The nurses, the advocates, the detectives, the DA, her family. The thousands who wrote to her when her victim&#8217;s statement was published. The cyclists who stopped Turner and chased him down. These books make us consider how care and love (defined as a verb) can be central to our work with students and larger society. P.S. The accountability paradigm of assessment with its emphasis on using grades to measure student knowledge and ability came under scrutiny. The learning-centric focus of the meaning assessment gained prominence. In <em>Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning<\/em> (<em>and What to Do Instead<\/em>), edited by Susan Blum, the contributors unequivocally identified grades as the real problem in the assessment of student learning. They advocated for qualitative rather than quantitative assessment of student learning.<\/p>\n<h2>Steve Weber, Coordinator of Circulation Services, Library Experience + Access Department (LEAD), Valley Library<\/h2>\n<p><em>That\u2019s Not How We Do It Here!: A Story about How Organizations Rise, Fall\u2014and Can Rise Again <\/em>by John P. Kotter &amp; Holger Rathgeber (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.oregonstate.edu\/permalink\/f\/s3heu1\/CP71249069760001451\">Valley Library<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kotterinc.com\/book\/thats-not-how-we-do-it-here\/\">Kotter Inc.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That an organization needs both innovation <a href=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Thatsnothowwedoithere.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-432 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2593\/files\/2022\/05\/Thatsnothowwedoithere-189x300.png\" alt=\"That\u2019s Not How We Do It Here!: A Story about How Organizations Rise, Fall\u2014and Can Rise Again by John P. However, it isn\u2019t unusual for someone to have an affinity for one approach and a mistrust for the other. As an international educator, knowing about political unrest, economic turmoil, natural disasters, etc. is important to offering timely and nuanced support to those I serve. But all too often, people in crisis get defined by the crisis, and I have found that knowing and appreciating the positive stories are equally important, especially in preserving their dignity.
