MGMT 448 Week 1/ Blog Post: Job Application Experiences

Based on my experience from the perspective of the applicant for the last job in which I applied for, I noticed a few red flags that I wish I would have considered more before taking the job. This job in particular was at Ulta Beauty, during my sophomore year of college, I was needing a part time job at the time to make some extra money; when I was busy with in person classes. I started my search knowing that I wanted to work somewhere that I actually enjoyed, and would be a good use of my spare time. I had a passion for makeup, therefore I thought Ulta Beauty would be the perfect place for me to get a part time job, so I applied! The application starts online, and if they consider you they call you to set up an in person interview. I got a call a few weeks later, and I set up a time to interview with them. To conclude my experience with this interview; I found it to be moderately unprofessional, and a bit non-inclusive. The interview was unprofessional in the manner that we had the interview in the middle of the store, while people were shopping around us; customers even interrupting (not knowing an interview was taking place). It was a very odd setting, with so much commotion going on around us it was very hard to concentrate and remain professional. It seemed non-conclusive in the aspect that I was told employees were expected to look their best with a full face of makeup on everyday, no matter how long your shift was. Although this is a makeup store, I feel it is far-fetched that employees are expected to do a full face of makeup everyday, I mean are we that ugly with out it? I was also asked questions during the interview that I feel didn’t pertain to my character, such as what is my favorite makeup brand?

Due to the nature of this interview, my experience during the job application process shaped my impression of this job in a negative way, and lowered my desire to work there. Not only did the non important questions, far-fetched expectations, and location of the interview turn me off from wanting to work at this place; but the nature of the people working there did too. Almost all of the employees were not friendly, and were incredibly stuck up; including mostly the boss/manager. I wish I had higher expectations at that point in my life for a job, but that was not the case then. I now know how to spot these red flags better, and wish I would have looked more into them before actually taking this job.
