The first time I had heard about the career field of software development was back in 2015 when a college friend abruptly quit his job and moved to San Francisco to attend a coding bootcamp. At the time, I was highly skeptical but intrigued to see his outcome and so I communicated with him weekly to see his progress. To my surprise, he was offered a six figure job shortly after the end of the 12 week bootcamp and I was shocked. Around this time, I had recently just paid off all my student loans and the thought of going back into debt to attend a coding bootcamp was not appealing. So I thought the next best option was to teach myself. I remember browsing www.codeacademy.com and other free resources online to learn the basics of Javascript and quickly realizing this was much more difficult than I anticipated. Out of frustration and extreme difficulty in learning to code from these resources, I temporarily abandoned my self-teaching aspirations and hopes of switching into this career field.
