I have joined over 7 different teams since I started working. And each time, it was both exciting and daunting to join a new team and/or company. On one hand, you have the opportunity to work with new people and learn new skills, but on the other hand, you have to navigate the unfamiliar terrain of a new workplace culture and establish yourself within a new group. Here are some tips that I have learned that work for me.
First, it is extremely important to learn about your new team members on a deeper level. Introduce yourself and ask about their roles, responsibilities, and interests. Find out what they think are the strengths of the team and what they think could be improved. This will give you a better understanding of how the team operates and how you can best contribute.
Second, be open to learning. Every team has their unique ways of working and it is important to learn how to integrate within the team. Whether it’s learning about the company’s products or services, the industry, or the specific processes and procedures of the team, embrace the opportunity to learn. This will not only help you be more effective in your role but also show your team members that you are committed to being a valuable member of the team.
Third, be proactive and take initiative. Don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do, take the initiative to find out what needs to be done and offer to help. This will demonstrate your willingness to work and your eagerness to contribute.
Fourth, be patient and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Change takes time and it may take some time for you to fully understand the company culture, processes, and procedures. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask. It’s better to ask for clarification than to make mistakes.
Fifth, establish clear communication with your team members. Make sure that you are aware of the team’s goals, expectations, and deadlines. Keep your team members informed of your progress and let them know if you need help or have any concerns.
Finally, always be yourself and bring your unique skills and perspectives to the team. You were hired for a reason, and your unique skills and perspectives can add value to the team. Don’t be afraid to share your ideas and contribute to the team’s success.
