Two beers is plenty, I grunt standing up and if I sneeze wrong, my back hurts for a week. It’s more obvious by the year but this body of mine has begun the breaking down process. Right now its inconvenient, but I’ve seen what old age does to the mind. That’s a bit more worrisome to me.

Here’s the problem, I love to learn new things. Even in this decrepit 32 year old brain, I love to take in new information and build new skills. This journey of getting back an engineering job turns out to be the perfect opportunity!

So some backstory first and then the plan. I had heard about an open software development role at a small company. I’m still in school at the time but figured, why not practice interviewing in the meantime? I’ve also never worked in the tech sector before. Let’s be clear, I am not expecting to get this job. But I’ll give it my best shot anyways.

I was informed the language structure they use. Golang. Never heard of it. Like I said, I’m pretty green. My wife had a great idea. Learn golang well enough to pass the technical interview. Tall order. I only had a month or so. But between working full time and school full time, I had a spare 30 minutes in the evenings. No excuse. So I studied, watched videos and practiced Leet Code. Finally the day comes and I pass with flying colors and get offered the position. That work carried me through the job and I was able to contribute right away.

Now that I’m out of the job, I am to take the same approach. I’m lacking in a lot of skills but aim to change that. Right now I’m working on Java and Rust; languages I see come up a lot in job postings. I have added to my daily routine an hour of coding practice. Anything to stay fresh. Lets hope it pays off.

So I’m in my thirties now.
