I Learn America

SCHOOLS – the first and ultimate hope for integration – are generally ill-equipped to serve immigrant teenagers. The traditional paradigm relegates them to the sidelines. Yet, it is in school that the children of immigration determine where they belong in the reality and imagination of their new culture. I Learn America is a documentary that follows five students as they broach the issues of mastering English, family dynamics, gender identity, adapting to life in the United States, and more.

We will be showing this film on the Corvallis campus as part of OSU’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration 2016:

Marta Civil at OSU

Our College of Education has the honor of co-hosting distinguished math professor Marta Civil of the University of Arizona while she is here at OSU. She will be giving a public talk on Tuesday, June 2 at 5:30 in the LaSells Stewart Center: Language and Culture Considerations in the Mathematics Education of Latina/o Students. State of Black Oregon 2015

Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud recently featured an interview with Nkenge Harmon Johnson, Urban League of Portland President. She talks about the recent release of the State of Black Oregon 2015 report, about her work traveling around the state as Communications Director for former Governor John Kitzhaber, and about Oregon universities’ issues of recruiting and then graduating African American students.

Derrick Jensen and Campus Happenings

At our last SEJ meeting, we watched an interview with Derrick Jensen from the Earth at Risk 2014 Conference in San Francisco. The entire 37 minute video is worthwhile and thought provoking. Jensen is speaking in a very casual, unscripted way for this interview, and yet he is not subtle with his opinions. He speaks specifically about schools and educators starting at 15:30.
