{"id":687,"date":"2011-07-25T16:33:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-25T23:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/?p=687"},"modified":"2011-07-26T21:08:09","modified_gmt":"2011-07-27T04:08:09","slug":"mud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/2011\/07\/25\/mud\/","title":{"rendered":"Mud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tired and covered in mud, I was ready for the weekend on Friday afternoon.\u00a0 Last week, since we didn\u2019t have any work to do for our chamber project, I was recruited to help with a sea grass experiment out at Winant Marsh which is a few miles up the Yaquina Estuary.\u00a0 The purpose of this experiment was to quantify the amount of nutrients that a particular sea grass takes up from marsh water.\u00a0 As I have explained in previous posts, marshes work wonders in cleaning water particularly by removing excess nutrients.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_688\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-688\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/2011\/07\/25\/mud\/dsc_0737\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-688\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-688\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/files\/2011\/07\/DSC_0737-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Collecting instruments from marsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My role in conducting this experiment was to take a water sample approximately every ten minutes during two low tides at a certain location along the marsh.\u00a0 There were two other people taking samples as well at two other locations.\u00a0 After our samples are analyzed, we will be able to compare nutrient uptake of a sea grass bed versus a bare stretch of the main channel.<\/p>\n<p>This experiment involved extensive preparation which meant we were out in the field Monday and Tuesday deploying instruments and taking measurements.\u00a0 Luckily, I did not have to partake in a night shift, but I did have to get up extremely early on Wednesday and Thursday to begin sampling.\u00a0 We were there both days from about 6am to 1pm.\u00a0 Thankfully the work wasn\u2019t that strenuous, so I was able to read scientific journal articles and study for the GRE in between sampling.\u00a0 Weirdly, I can say that I enjoy getting up early.\u00a0 It was a cool feeling to look at my watch at 9:00am and realize that I have already been away for four hours.\u00a0\u00a0 Waking up at 4:45am for this experiment was a little extreme, but I like being up with the sun.\u00a0 I feel like I waste time sleeping, so I am now motivated to get out of bed early and accomplish more!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_689\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-689\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/2011\/07\/25\/mud\/dsc_0766\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-689\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-689\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/seagrantscholars\/files\/2011\/07\/DSC_0766-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My field buddies and I<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, on Friday morning we headed out to collect instruments and clean up from our experiment.\u00a0 This week will be spent completing data entry as well as collecting a few more crucial pieces of data.\u00a0 I never thought I would say this, but I\u2019m enjoying sitting at my desk all day.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way deserved break from all of the field work that I have been a part of these past few weeks.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure by the end of the week, I\u2019ll be sick of it and ready for next week\u2019s crazy field schedule!<\/p>\n<p>Check out my personal blog: <a href=\"http:\/\/saraduncan.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sara Duncan<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tired and covered in mud, I was ready for the weekend on Friday afternoon.\u00a0 Last week, since we didn\u2019t have any work to do for our chamber project, I was recruited to help with a sea grass experiment out at &hellip;
