Back in August 2020 it was still pretty fresh into the pandemic for me and I didn’t have much going on besides applying for jobs and playing WoW. Out of the blue I got a call from a number I didn’t recognize. I looked at my computer screen then looked back at my phone. On any normal day, I would have let the call go to voicemail and continued leveling my gnome warlock. However for some reason, I felt like I should answer the call and take a much needed break from gaming. I firmly believe that had I not answered the call I probably would’ve been glossed over for my current role. There was a lot of luck involved with getting this current job and I’m very glad (and lucky) that I decided to take a break and answer a life-changing call.

I currently work as an Intern at Intel doing Data Analytics and Database work for a small team focused on gaming. Thanks to a Data Analytics boot-camp I took in 2019 and the Computer Science program I’m in here at OSU, I was offered an intern role. My current day-to-day responsibilities has changed significantly since I started working here. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time learning about the inner workings of my team and the related organizations at Intel. Additionally I was using Tableau to visualize the data we had in our database. While I still use Tableau almost daily to produce graphs and visualizations, my work has begun to move more into development work for our internal applications.

I will just note here another reason why I think I was pretty lucky, I had the “Tableau” buzzword on my resume, which is my boss’ favorite visualization tool. So a fair warning to people out there, there are some technologies that are a buzzword to some and not to others. In my case I had the right buzzword’s on my resume to get a call.

Some of the tools, languages, and technologies I’ve gotten to use over my internship include Python, SQL (a lot), Tableau (a lot), PowerBI, Salesforce, EntityFramework, GitLab, and various APIs. I’ve really enjoyed my time working here and plan to continue working here for quite some time!
