In fact, on the ArchivesNext blog post &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archivesnext.com\/?p=1840\">You guys really don\u2019t like Sharpies\u2013the #badarchivists Twitter meme<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/allysoneb\">@allysoneb<\/a> says that &#8220;#badarchivists use the word &#8216;miscellaneous.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not wanting to be a &#8220;bad archivist,&#8221; I&#8217;m going to be a &#8220;hair-splitting archivist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word miscellany as &#8220;A mixture, medley, or assortment; (a collection of) miscellaneous objects or items.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the gobs of Peck&#8217;s lantern slides we digitized, uploaded, and categorized into Flickr sets, <a title=\"Peck misc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/osucommons\/sets\/72157626647297984\/\">the miscellany here is all that is left<\/a>. Looking back to the OED you can think of the delightful examples they provide to frame this really random set:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bacon in 1617 used the term to describe &#8220;A Miscellany and Confusion of Causes of all Natures.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>E. Bulwer-Lytton in 1833 said &#8220;Turn your eyes now to the ultra Radicals, what a motley, confused, jarring, miscellany of irreconcilable theorists!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Z. N.
