When, Where, and Why…

Where is Sarek

Sarek National Park is in the Northern half of Sweden near the Norwegian border. Sarek is bordered by two other national parks, Stora Sjöfallet and Padjelanta (Sarek National Park | Arctic Circle, Lapland, Wilderness, 1998). Sarek is also by Jokkmokk, a small town with a population of less than 3,000 (Gregory, 2016).

When was sarek established as a national park?

Sarek was established as a national park in 1909, officially becoming a national park in 1910 (Sveriges National Parker, n.d.-a). In 1996 Sarek national park became a part of the Laponia World Heritage site (Sveriges National Parker, n.d.-a).

Why was this protected area created?

Sarek was established as a national park thanks to Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (Djossa, 2018). Nordenskiöld was concerned about the negative toll of humans on nature and so he influenced the Swedish Parliament to create Sarek in 1909 (Djossa, 2018). A more recent reason for the continued protection of Sarek is the positive effects on rural development thanks to tourism (Lundmark et al., 2010).
