Management and HR

Managing and HR practices go hand in hand due to the duties that HR contributes to a company. Human Resources, commonly referred to as HR, is there to protect and help train employees. This is extremely important when discussing managing because a company’s culture is critical in having productivity, strong performance, and overall happy employees. In the Fortune article for the top 100 companies, Hilton stands at number one. An employee was quoted saying that they feel that they are apart of a family working for Hilton and they are not just another number. Not only is the management doing a great job of creating this culture, HR is supporting in this by providing the proper training, stepping in when needed in situations to both resolve and dissolve, and making sure that the people feel that they matter. Another company that stood out when looking at the top 100 was Workday. An employee was quoted saying that the executives that they work under are very transparent and act like a normal employee themselves. They also were quoted saying that it is a family type atmosphere. The theme of family being apart of the culture of both successful companies shows that both management and HR are doing their part in establishing and maintaining this.

To elaborate on management, the Workday scenario encapsulates the type of manager that I would want to be. I live by the idea of leading by example and doing the right things even when no one is watching. I personally feel that the best managers and leaders do the work that others are doing rather than feeling like it is their duty to solely delegate. Managers and leaders can gain great respect and trust from their employees or counterparts when taking this approach. The aspects of a managers job that is most challenging would be confrontation or solving issues. Making others feel poorly because of the necessity to call them out is never an easy task but it is the job of managers to do so in order to keep company culture strong.
