Typical vs. Maximal Performance

  1. If you were in the shoes of the business owner and had to choose which person would you hire (Avery or Jaime) and why?
  2. Describe a type of job where it would be better to hire someone like Avery (i.e., high potential, poor consistency) than Jaime? What is it about that job that makes someone like Avery more valuable than Jaime?
  3. Describe a type of job where it would be better to hire someone like Jaime (i.e., low potential, high consistency) than Avery? What is it about that job that makes someone like Jaime more valuable?

This is a tough situation because you don’t necessarily want a slacker working for you because you have no control over the time they are going to be productive and the times they are going to be less than average. On the other hand, you don’t want to hire someone who gives “pretty good” results but crumbles under pressure. Personally, I would choose Jamie because, in terms of what the business could benefit from, I think consistency is the right decision. If Avery was the pick, you would never know what to expect from her and her productivity would be on her terms. Company resources would ultimately go to waste during the times where she is producing below-average results which is not worth it when thinking of longevity for the business’s success. 

I think the jobs that Avery would be good for are creative roles such as a leader of innovation, product designer, or even a marketing manager of some kind. These roles require outside of the box thinking which she is able to do at her performance ceiling. Avery can pull through when she needs to, which would be good in roles where creativity is key. She could think up new ideas quickly. 

I think a role where Jamie would thrive is a regimented position that don’t have much room for growth or change. Since she is good at staying consistent, a job with little change would be good for someone that had her work ethic. A job such as a compliance director would be good for Jamie because of her ability to stick to rules and enforce them.
