Blog Post #3: First Weeks of Work

I am midway through my second week of my new job! So far I have had a very good experience!

Before my first day, I received a box with my computer and company goodies. It was nice to get some swag and feel like I was already part of the company. One of the items I received is a coin with my company logo. Coworkers often share pictures of them with their coins in unique places. I am looking forward to contributing to the pictures!

On my first day of work, I received my login information and mostly setup my computer for work. I couldn’t sleep well, so I was glad to just be doing tasks like that during the day. I also had a welcome lunch with my team and they sent me a gift card for Doordash. Everyone was very welcoming and I felt included!

After my first day, I worked through some training on the company’s platform. I also completed my dev environment setup. I just wrapped up all of my training tasks as I write this and will be shadowing other software engineers next. I am excited to be able to learn from my team!

Regarding the capstone project, my team has been making good progress on sprint 2! I feel like I am getting a little behind right now because of everything going on with my new job. I am determined to catch back up this week and I hope that all goes well. My teammates are contributing a lot of great work and I am grateful for their contributions!

I excited to make progress on my team’s project since it is something that relates to an app that I use in my daily life! We are making a tabletop roleplaying game dashboard for a game called “Dungeon World.” I currently play in a few “Dungeons and Dragons” games and use a popular character dashboard for that game called “DND Beyond.” It is interesting to go through this project and try to improve upon things that annoy me with DND Beyond’s interface. It also is nice to make an app for a game with a simpler ruleset. Once we complete the project, I hope we can release it to the public! There is a vibrant community for Dungeon World and I can see players appreciating an app to manage their characters through their game campaigns!
