During the final week, I will be writing on Option 1: Health and Safety. This will focus on stress, my stress levels, and how I can address it.
Starting with the Life Stress Inventory, I had a cumulative score of 224. This score, “implies about a 50% chance of a major health breakdown in the next 2 years,” (Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory). On the Coping & Stress Management Skills Test, I was informed that I have a problem-focused coping score of 71. On the Type A Personality Survey, I learned that I have an impatience score of 46.
From these tests, I learned that I have a lot of stress and I should look for ways to reduce that amount considering a lot of the items on the Holmes-Rahe test were things I haven’t had to deal with yet at this point in my life. I also learned that I have good coping skills for stress management when it comes to changeable stressors. Finally, when I am over-stressed I may lash out at people even if I don’t mean it. These are all important things to know so that I can work on bettering myself and my life and ensure that stressful moments do not create irreversible damage.
An article on HR Morning by Michele McGovern discusses 6 ways in which organizations can help reduce stress. These tips include normalizing mental health, turning on music, getting employees to move more, creating quiet zones, practicing preventative maintenance, and giving managers guidance. Mental health has become a more pressing topic in the past few years, so it is important to be open about it in the workplace and deal with it appropriately so that it does not cause larger health concerns. Ensuring that the workplace is set up to relieve stress and not create it is a great way to show employees you care and help them manage their stress.
