When looking at 2020 Fortune best companies to work at, the three companies I decided to focus on and take a closer look at were The Cheesecake Factory, REI, and Marriott International. I chose these three companies because I am familiar with them all and I wanted to focus on corporations that are in different industries.
One common theme that I noticed between all three companies was that the employees seem to really value the people they work with. They feel accepted and like one big family, they feel valued and not just like another random employee that needs to fit in a box. They put on events that matter to their employees and feel welcome in their work environments. The lecture discusses how HRM is important because the organization is influenced by the people that work for it, so having happy and healthy employees is crucial to the success of the company. Managing diversity and making your employees feel valued and like family as well as focusing on CSR creates a more positive environment.
I would like to be a kind, fair, and respected manager. I would want people to feel comfortable coming to talk to me about issues and not feel worried about repercussions. However, I also want to be seen as someone who will take care of business and cannot be easily manipulated due to my kindness. I think there is a fine line I would want to walk between relaxed and strict because I think you cannot be too much of one or the other in order to be productive. I would want my employees to know they matter and can count on me to advocate for them and their success.
I think being able to please everyone is a difficult part of a manager’s job. It is simply not possible to please everyone, so there will always be someone upset and you need to know where you can help and where you just need to let it go. I also think that determining what matters to your employees can be difficult, but it is definitely worth it in the long run in order for you to be able to relate to and motivate your employees.
