CEOAS at the Farmers’ Market

On Saturdays, when the weather is nice, 1rst street in downtown Corvallis bustles with the weekly farmer’s market.  Starting in 2016, CEOAS hosts a booth to highlight its major earth, ocean, and atmospheric research programs.  The P-mag lab has been involved in highlighting both CEOAS’s Marine Geology programs and Paleoclimate research groups.

Salmon Bowl

Every year in February, CEOAS hosts the Salmon Bowl, the regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). Twenty teams of high school students who excel in math and science participate in this Jeopardy-like buzz-in style academic competition. Teams of four students answer question on marine science, navigation, geography, technology, marine policy, and ocean-related current events. CEOAS volunteers our facilities as the setting for the tournament, and faculty, students, and staff volunteer as science judges, moderators, time keepers and scorekeepers. Since 1998, the competition has provided a forum for high school students to receive national recognition for their talents, and for affiliates of CEOAS to broaden awareness and understanding of ocean science while fostering future marine scientists. PMag Lab members have participated in several different roles from score keeper, answer runner, and scientific advisory roles to foster scientific interest at the K-12 level.
