As I near the end of this term, and the end of my B.S. in Computer Science, I’ve been thinking about how crazy it is that despite this being the end of a two-year journey, it’s only the beginning of a new lifelong one. While that lifelong journey will be one of continuous learning, it will also hopefully be one with much more free time, and that’s something I’ve begun to think more and more about as we get closer to December.
Some of my first goals following graduation are career-focused. I want to spend more time diving into the tech stacks we use at work and learning how to do my job better. I also want to start planning for future career prospects following my current position – I recently registered a domain for a personal website, and plan on launching it as a way to showcase my personal portfolio.
I’ll need to spend some time shaping up some of my personal projects to display on the website, but thankfully one of them – the capstone project we’ve been working on – will already be good to go. I also plan on working more on my understanding of machine learning in order to prepare for entrance into Georgia Tech’s OMSCS program next year.
Outside of pursuing additional professional goals, I plan on making the most out of having free time again. The first part of that will be getting back into physical exercise – something I’ve done very little of the past two years. Prior to beginning the program, I was regularly cycling a few hundred miles a week, and I plan on making a strong effort to get back in shape and to that point as quickly as I can.
Additionally, I want to spend some time on home improvement projects at my house. I purchased a townhouse with my fiancee earlier this year, but have been too busy to get around to many of the projects that have been building up. First up will be replacing the flooring in the top floor of my house, but after that who knows what I will tackle next.
Ultimately, there’s a lot that will change with my life in December. It feels like in some ways I’ll be pressing the unpause button on many parts of my life, and there are countless new things for me to explore. If I’m being completely honest with myself though, I’ll probably spend a few weeks simply basking in all of my new free time, and get a degree to reward myself for the past two years of work on top of that!
