More a mindset than a metric, PWS reminds us that \u201cwe have the privilege and responsibility to keep open pathways to academic success and \u2026 to provide every student with the support necessary to succeed \u2026 without compromising our academic standards.\u201d Some of the common metrics for calculating student success are rates of retention, persistence, time-to-degree, and DFW rate (i.e., the percentage of \u201cDs,\u201d \u201cFs,\u201d and \u201cWithdrawals\u201d in a course) (Mowreader, 2024; Pelletier, 2019). However, it can sometimes be challenging to see what instructors do in their everyday teaching online and in the classroom as meaningfully contributing to these broader goals to move the needle on something like university-wide retention \u2026 but effective teaching is essential to student success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do as an instructor and how can you get involved in the conversation at OSU?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Support students in preparing to learn through:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Learner-Centered or \u201cWarm\u201d Syllabus<\/strong>: Use positive, welcoming, and inclusive language, rather than penalizing language (See <a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstate.app.box.com\/file\/904894500095?s=9jwnb0u9mdprtp25cuve6frcoyi49u1q\">CTL resource on warm syllabi<\/a>.);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scaffolding: <\/strong>Breaking large assignments into smaller parts; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transparency: <\/strong>Use the TiLT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) framework: a student-centered approach to making assignment guidelines and descriptions\u202fas\u202fclear and transparent\u202fas possible (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilthighered.com\/\">TiLT Higher Ed resources<\/a>.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Support students during class \/ learning through:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cSmall Teaching\u201d<\/strong>: Brief (5-&nbsp;to 15-minute) interventions into individual learning session, such as guided reading prompts; opening class with an image, story, or quote to capture attention; asking students to recall on the lesson from last class; presenting a case study or problem, asking students to predict outcome; before leaving class, listing students\u2019 \u201cmuddiest point.\u201d (Lang, 2016)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Active Learning: <\/strong>Moving beyond just lecturing to require students to become actively involved in their own learning rather than passive listeners, including group work, class discussions, think-pair-share, minute papers, interactive polling, and experiential learning (See <a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.oregonstate.edu\/core-area-guides\">CTL active learning resources in \u201cInstructional Methods\u201d<\/a>.);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inclusivity: <\/strong>Generate sense of belonging for students and invite students\u2019 sociocultural identities to be incorporated into teaching and learning (See <a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.oregonstate.edu\/core-area-guides\">CTL Inclusive Teaching Resources<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Support student learning through assessments:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Frequent Feedback: <\/strong>Students need a mix of informal, low stakes and formal, higher stakes assessments to gauge whether they are on track with learning; continuous feedback is essential to student success (<a href=\"https:\/\/hbsp.harvard.edu\/inspiring-minds\/why-student-success-depends-on-continuous-feedback\">Hommel &amp; Rohrlich, 2022<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rubrics: <\/strong>Using rubrics can make grading more streamlined. They can also help students better understand expectations, especially as part of TiLT;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Canvas Gradebook: <\/strong>Keeping your Canvas gradebook well-organized and up-to-date increases transparency, ensures accuracy, and gives students data to make informed decisions about how to stay the course or change strategies to succeed (<a href=\"https:\/\/qilt.qu.edu\/knowledge-resources-learnings-posts\/enhancing-student-success-through-effective-grading-and-feedback-in-the-lms\">Nemeroff, 2024<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get Involved through the ESG Winter Engagement Sessions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can contribute to the conversation at OSU about how we can work towards \u201cEvery Student Graduates\u201d (ESG).
