In his <a href=\"https:\/\/leadership.oregonstate.edu\/sites\/leadership.oregonstate.edu\/files\/2024-09\/Becker-2024%20University%20Day%20Presentation.pdf\">September 17 lecture<\/a>, Becker shared some startling statistics on public perceptions of American universities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>38% of the general public believe that universities are doing a good job of developing a skilled workforce (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/15-findings-from-chronicle-data-on-public-perception\"><em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>31% believe we are doing a good job of developing a well-informed citizenry (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/15-findings-from-chronicle-data-on-public-perception\"><em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About half of Americans say having a college degree today is less important that it was twenty years ago (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/05\/23\/is-college-worth-it-2\/\">Pew Research Center<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Becker\u2019s informal conversations with Washington lawmakers suggest that both sides of the political spectrum believe colleges are too expensive, we\u2019re not teaching what we should be teaching, and we\u2019re not preparing the workforce America needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More troubling for Becker is what our graduates believe about their college education. He cited a <em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> study which reported that a fifth of four-year college graduates say the degree was not worth it. Their sense of the value of their college education is directly tied to the degree, the cost of college, the debt they incur, and their financial earnings after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do we encourage students to see the value of their college education? A first step is naming career readiness skills in courses at all levels in the college curriculum. Let&#8217;s give students the language they need to connect the dots between what happens in the classroom and in the workforce. Keep reading below to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What is \u201ccareer readiness\u201d?<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/career-readiness\/competencies\/career-readiness-defined\"> National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)<\/a>, career readiness is \u201ca foundation from which to demonstrate requisite core competencies that broadly prepare the college educated for success in the workplace and lifelong career management.\u201d When talking to students, it\u2019s also helpful to think of these core competencies in terms of career advancement and to consider a broader definition of \u201ccareer\u201d as a sense of meaning and purpose after college. In other words, career readiness skills are also lifelong learning skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?resize=1024%2C347&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eight career readiness competencies from NACE\" class=\"wp-image-4644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?resize=1024%2C347&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?resize=300%2C102&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?resize=768%2C261&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?resize=1536%2C521&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1441\/files\/2024\/10\/NACE-competencies20.jpg?w=1845&amp;ssl=1 1845w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What are the core competencies that employers are looking for from college graduates?<\/em><\/strong> NACE has identified eight career readiness competencies, each of which can be developed and demonstrated in a variety of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Career and self-development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equity and inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professionalism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teamwork<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Are career readiness skills only a part of things like internships?<\/em><\/strong> No! \u201cFrom here to career\u201d is one of the goals of OSU\u2019s new<a href=\"https:\/\/coreeducation.oregonstate.edu\/\"> Core Education<\/a> program. Students in Core Ed will gain professional skills and competencies designed for adaptability, longevity, and integrity in a global workforce. But career readiness can be incorporated into any OSU class!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What are some tips for integrating career readiness skills in undergraduate classes?<\/em><\/strong> Many faculty instructors are probably already teaching students portable universal skills in addition to field-specific skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few ways to highlight the career readiness skills students are gaining in their classes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Syllabus or Start Here Module<\/strong>: Let students know the skills employers are looking for. Mention the relevant NACE competencies your students will gain as they are meeting the learning outcomes of your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assignments<\/strong>: Include a purpose section on your assignment sheets that can also highlight career readiness skills students will practice with the assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Class activities<\/strong>: Consider designing small group in-class activities that utilize<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/17ELIGqs1W3xGbNVLeXjwyrGlAYIlBLlx\/view\"> problem-based learning<\/a> where students apply skills and concepts they\u2019re learning in your course to authentic or \u201creal-world\u201d scenarios or case studies. Have students reflect on which NACE career skills they practiced using the sample behaviors on the NACE website in a low-stakes reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Want to find out more about career readiness?<\/em><\/strong> Check out the Career Development Center\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/career.oregonstate.edu\/faculty-staff\/career-development-classroom\"> faculty resources<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/career.oregonstate.edu\/faculty-staff\/career-champions\"> Career Champions<\/a> program.
