Advising FAQ

Q: I keep hearing that I need to complete experiential learning credits for my major. Where can I learn more?

A: The majority of PHHS majors/options require some form of experiential (hands-on) learning credits. Typically these credits come in the form of internships or practicums, but there are some opportunities to have research or special projects count depending on your interests and availability. Most students complete their experiential learning credits during the second half of their degree, but some opportunities are available before that.

The best place to start your independent research regarding experiential learning is at https://health.oregonstate.edu/internships where each major and the available options are listed. Your academic advisor is also a great resource to learn more about these options and discuss which might be best for you.

PHHS Club Spotlight- Human Development & Family Studies Club

The Human Development and Family Sciences Student Club is for all students, regardless of major, who are interested in learning more about human and family development and in gaining skills and knowledge to help improve the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.

The club organizes several activities each term, including professional development, service, and recreational events. The club is a great way to meet students in the HDFS Program, build your resume, and gain experience for graduate school or work beyond college.

Follow them to learn more about upcoming meetings and events on Instagram, Facebook, and the club website.

Resource Spotlight: Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU App

Finding time to focus on your mental health can be tough, especially when it comes to finding local providers. The Anytime Anywhere app gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Students can download the Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU and learn more about the service at beav.es/anytimeanywhere
