{"id":7261,"date":"2012-09-28T01:15:46","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T01:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/?p=7261"},"modified":"2012-09-28T01:15:46","modified_gmt":"2012-09-28T01:15:46","slug":"or-latino-heritage-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/2012\/09\/28\/or-latino-heritage-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Latino\/a Heritage Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/files\/2012\/09\/hispanic_conference.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7266\" title=\"hispanic_conference\" src=\"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/files\/2012\/09\/hispanic_conference.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3293\/files\/2012\/09\/hispanic_conference.png 544w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3293\/files\/2012\/09\/hispanic_conference-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday September 22, the OMA was thrilled to attend the Hispanic Heritage and Activism in Oregon conference at Pacific University in Forest Grove, a one day gathering of academics, students, and community members organized by\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/centrocultural.org\/english\/news-events\/hispanicactivismevent.html\" target=\"_blank\">Centro Cultural de Washington County<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonhumanities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon Humanities<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We began the day viewing the documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/harvestofloneliness.com\/englishversion\/english.html\" target=\"_blank\">Harvest of Loneliness: The Bracero Program<\/a>\u00a0which incorporates numerous\u00a0interviews with\u00a0ex-Bracero workers and their families who share their memories of the program. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The morning then included three\u00a0forums to\u00a0&#8220;explore the journey of Hispanics to Oregon and Washington County in particular and the activism that has nurtured self determination in the Hispanic community.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latinos in Oregon: De d\u00f3nde venimos y c\u00f3mo llegamos<\/li>\n<li>Activism for Social Justice: Apoy\u00e1ndonos y defendi\u00e9ndonos<\/li>\n<li>Personal, Family and professional resiliency. Sobreviviendo y super\u00e1ndonos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/events.r20.constantcontact.com\/register\/event?oeidk=a07e68zwxx89a97c9f2&amp;llr=5csndegab\" target=\"_blank\">~ Hispanic Heritage and Activism in\u00a0Oregon website<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During lunch,\u00a0the keynote speaker, Jerry Garcia, PhD, Director, Chicano Education Program and CAMP, Eastern Washington University, discussed his research on the Bracero Program, specifically the deaths that occurred during the 1940s to Bracero railroad workers.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon sessions focused on\u00a0activism\u00a0in relation to employment, education, and social justice for the Latino\/a community in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>We concluded the conference\u00a0with a discussion of\u00a0the\u00a0take away theme\u00a0for the day which was: the Need for Education.
