{"id":16591,"date":"2015-04-18T08:00:57","date_gmt":"2015-04-18T08:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/?p=16591"},"modified":"2015-04-18T08:00:57","modified_gmt":"2015-04-18T08:00:57","slug":"milagro-aztlan-osu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/2015\/04\/18\/milagro-aztlan-osu\/","title":{"rendered":"Milagro Workshop and Performance at OSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/oregonmulticulturalarchives\/files\/2015\/04\/blog-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16594\" title=\"blog-pic\" src=\"http:\/\/wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-multicultural-archives\/files\/2015\/04\/blog-pic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3293\/files\/2015\/04\/blog-pic.png 599w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3293\/files\/2015\/04\/blog-pic-192x300.png 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The OMA was incredibly excited to collaborate with <a href=\"http:\/\/dce.oregonstate.edu\/cccc\" target=\"_blank\">OSU&#8217;s Centro Cultural C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez <\/a>for its Tribute Month celebrations to host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milagro.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teatro Milagro <\/a>for a workshop and performance!<\/p>\n<p>The pre-performance workshop asked attendees to think about the\u00a0connections between\u00a0 art\u00a0and social justice\u00a0&#8211; a\u00a0connection especially important in the Chicano\u00a0Movement.\u00a0We learned about Luis Valdez and his creation of El Teatro Campesino, and the Teatro&#8217;s roots in Commedia dell&#8217;arte dating back to in Italy in the 16th century.\u00a0The workshop involved\u00a0participants creating still images to express emotions and concepts\u00a0to get us in the theatre mindset and help us better understand the context to the evening&#8217;s performance.<\/p>\n<p><em>Searching for Aztl\u00e1n, <\/em>written &amp; directed by Lakin Valdez (following in his father&#8217;s footsteps),\u00a0chronicles one high school teacher\u2019s journey to re-energize her support of the Mexican American Studies (MAS) Program in Tucson, Arizona\u2019s Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) which was dismantled in 2012. After an opening scene in which the teacher, Dolores Huelga, defends the MAS program to a very conservative school board, she is left discouraged and considers giving up the fight. She is then swept up in a dust storm and is taken to an alternate reality where she \u201csearches for Aztl\u00e1n\u201d \u2013 the play very much references and follows the basic plot of Dorothy&#8217;s journey in <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>. Like the film, the play includes musical numbers and is a satire. The play is self-described by the theatre group as \u201ca metaphorical yellow brick road of discovery about what it means to be Chicano in contemporary society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along her journey Dolores encounters various characters (all essentially following the plot of the Wizard of Oz): the Madre of the Aztecas (the \u201cgood\u201d witch), Jan Bruja \u201cLa Lechuza\u201d (the \u201cbad\u201d witch who represents Arizona\u2019s ex-Governor Jan Brewer), and three companions she meets along the way, all exaggerated characterizations of Chicanos 1) a 1970s militant Chicano 2) a 1980s \u201cHigh-Spanic\u201d who shuns her Latina roots 3) a 2000s \u201cDreamer.\u201d\u00a0In the beginning of the play the four companions are lost and alone and represent differing types of Chicano\/as. By the end of the play, the characters reflect upon the idea that they are all Latino\/a, and when they work together in a united cause, they are stronger.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Dolores is more committed than ever to continue with the cause in support of the MAS program. For example, the closing scene includes a voice over of news excerpts along with Dolores holding an American flag while another character carries a Mexican flag and two other characters hold signs that state: \u201cEducation is Not a Crime\u201d and \u201cSave Ethnic Studies\u201d &#8211; the play ends with the characters chanting \u201c\u00a1S\u00ed se puede!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">For more about Milagro&#8217;s history, be sure to check out the archival collection!<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/scarc.library.oregonstate.edu\/coll\/milagro\/\" target=\"_blank\">Milagro (Miracle Theatre Group) Records, 1966-2014<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The OMA was incredibly excited to collaborate with OSU&#8217;s Centro Cultural C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez for its Tribute Month celebrations to host Teatro Milagro for a workshop and performance!
